In this tutorial, I will teach you how to customize
the Color Scheme
of your Windows to match your IE toolbars.
You have most likely chosen a Window's Color Scheme
from the program's Scheme Presets.
If you're like me--you want more than what you see in the options.
I found those either bland and boring or just not the right
mix of colors to suit my taste. Good News!!!
You can customize the colors to be whatever you want.
Then you can save your custom scemes to select from later
on.
Cool, huh?!!!
STEP ONE
Open Display Properties Window
(2 ways I know to do this either way will work)
A) Go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel then
double click on the Display icon
or you can do the shortcut way.....
B) Rt click on your desktop and choose
'Active Desktop>Customize my desktop
(to try this now, you'll either have to minimize this
tutorial window
or click on your desktop
icon at the far left in the bottom toolbar.)
option B) shortcut pulls up this window... |

|
STEP TWO With your Display
Properties window open,
Click on the 'Appearance' tab
it should look like this......

STEP THREE Select an
Item to Customize
This is where you would normally click on 'Scheme'
and select
a preset scheme from the drop-down menu.
Right now, we are NOT going to do this.
Instead, go down to the next option called 'Item'
(see 3A)
Click on the little down arrow next to the item window to get the
drop down menu.
This is where you select an
item to customize (see 3B)
You can play around and experiment with the items listed to see what
they are
(I have illustrations and descriptions of the the Items at the
end of the tutorial).
Take a look at 3C....note
that this is where
you will click to choose your colors
(see STEP FOUR)

STEP FOUR Set Custom
Colors for Selected Item
Some of the Items in the drop down menu have the option to
change colors
(a color box will appear at 3C
if you can customize the color...
if not, it will be blank)
Similarly, if the item has an option to customize the font/font color
the font window will list the fonts and the font color box will be
active
The following Diagram illustrates how to set custom colors:

How to set your custom colors:
1) Click one of the little white boxes where it says
'custom colors' (see C1)
2) Select a Basic Color (see C2)
to set the color pallate for that color
3) Choose the Shade of color you like from your color
pallate (see C3)
4) Click 'Add to Custom Colors' button (see C4)
5) Highlight the Custom Color you just added to
Custom Color palatte (C4)
6) Click 'Ok' (see C5)
*make sure to click the ok at C5, not the ok at bottom
STEP FIVE Apply the color/font
changes to your selected Item
1) At the Bottom right side of the Application window,
click on 'Apply' to apply the color
changes for selected item
STEP SIX Name & Save
New Custom Color Scheme
*Hint* Wait to do STEP SIX until You have made color changes
to all
the Items you want included in your new color scheme.
1) Click on the 'save as' button in the middle,
next to the Scheme window
2) Name your Color Scheme in the pop-up
'save scheme as' window and click 'ok'
3) The name of your New Custom Color Scheme
will appear
in the Scheme window and drop down menu
4) You can create as many Custom Color Schemes as you
want
and
change them as often as you like.
Once you save your scheme,
it will be available to choose from anytime later
from the drop down Scheme menu.
Item Descriptions/Illustrations
There are several items I customize
when making a Color Scheme:
*note* ~~while learning what the items do...
A good way to see the color changes
is to choose a brite color like florescent green,
then look at the above windows to see the changes.
Once you know what it does...choose your color.
(Just be sure you dont click 'ok' or 'apply'
until you like the changes!!!)
3-D Objects --this
sets the color of the frames on your windows & toolbars
*it's the main one I change when making a new scheme...very
important!
(On this one you can also change the color of the font,
which sets the colors for the little x you click to close window)

Active/Inactive Title Bar --the colored bar at the top of active/inactive windows
(you can change the font/font color too)

Active/Inactive window Border----the thin line/border around
the window

Menu--toolbar just
below the title bar
(on this one you can also set font/font color)
*note....if you use bright or dark colors for the bar,
make sure to use
a white or light pastel colors for the font, which will be easier to read

Message Box--Pop up
message box.
on this you can customize font/color

Window--the background
of the active window
(usually it's white, but you can customize this color and font/color)

This concludes my Color Scheme Tutorial.
